The mellophone is for trumpet players because it is more like a trumpet in the way that it is built. It has a specific mouthpiece similar to that of a trumpet and less of a horn. Mellophones are more common in marching bands. The sound varies from a horn and is quite a bit different.
Both instruments can be played with trumpet fingerings.
I have been practicing on a mellophone this whole time and now I must go play a marching french horn at Ridgeland. What now? CHALLENGE ACCEPTED. ;D
